My idea of a vacation is a beautiful beach and ample good food. I just left Donostia–aka San Sebastian–in Northern Spain’s Basque region, where I spent 5 days con mi madre, eating, taking in La Concha bay, marveling at suicidal Spanish surfers, eating, taking in some culture, marveling at old Basque men in big berets, and then eating more. The city boasts more Michelin stars per capita than anyplace outside Paris (although, granted, it’s a rather small capita), so it’s bursting with hungry tourists from all over Spain and the world. But Michelin stars bedamned, everyone is devouring pintxos (the Basque word for tapas) at every turn, from about 6pm until there’s nothing but crumbs and paper napkins left…Delicious insanity! We had memorable pinxtos at La Cepa (smoky-salty grilled octopus steeped in olive oil for me, anchovies for my mom, and of course, jamon) and Gandarias (teensy filets of beef with roasted peppers and skewers of grilled mushrooms with ham and garlic), washed down with a copa or three of vino de casa…It’s only 2 euros a glass!
